How do I use my Scanner under UNIX?

You need SANE (Scanner Access Now Easy).

There are 2 parts to this software, "backend" drivers which present a standard network-aware interface to your particular scanner, and "frontend" programs, which allow user interaction. Sane has backends for many digital cameras as well as scanners.

The Sane backend runs on your Unix machine, whilst front ends are available for both Unix and Windows. The usual Unix front end is XSane though I believe it can also interrface directly in to The Gimp.

If your CD recorder is a SCSI one and your Unix variant does not have a "Generic SCSI" interface you may need SCG by Joerg Schilling.
